昔の映画をスクリーンで観た①「マイ・フェア・レディ」～午前十時の映画祭の思い出～ I watched old movie at the movie theater① "My Fair Lady"

昔の名作映画を、リバイバル上映などによって、この現代に映画館のスクリーンで観た経験について書き連ねていくシリーズを今回から始めようと思います。
記念すべき第一回は、オードリーヘップバーン主演、1964年公開のミュージカル映画、「マイ・フェア・レディ」です。
皆さんは、「午前十時の映画祭」というものをご存じでしょうか？
一年間かけて様々な名作映画を、1作品につき1～2週間の間、1日1回ずつ、全国色々なところの映画館で上映する企画です。

今年で14回目だそうですが、ここ数年は、ゴールデンウイークあたりにオードリーヘップバーンの映画が上映されており、
昨年、2023年のオードリー作品が、「マイ・フェア・レディ」でした。
ミュージカル映画好きで、オードリー好きでもある私。「マイ・フェア・レディ」は、中学生のときに地元の図書館でＤＶＤを借りて以来、大・大・大好きな映画。
1964年の映画は、21世紀に映画館で観られるわけなんてなく、DVDや配信、テレビ放送などの小さな画面で観るものだと思い込んでいた私は、昨年この「午前十時の映画祭」の存在を知り、ラインナップに「マイ・フェア・レディ」があるのを見つけて、嬉しくて飛び上がりました。
歌詞に使われている英単語の意味なんて半分もわからないのに音の感じで覚えて、劇中歌をそらで歌えるようになるまでDVDを繰り返し観た中学時代の自分が、「10年後に映画館で観れるよ」って聞いたら何ていうかしら。
2023年4月28日金曜日、午前十時の映画祭13でのマイ・フェア・レディの上映初日に、早速映画館へと向かいました（院試が迫っていたのに無視して、時間割超絶スカスカ学部4年生イヤーを楽しむ、お気楽大学生でした）。
マイフェアレディを、映画館の大スクリーンと、重厚な音響で、しかも4K上映（マイフェアレディは4K上映対象作品でした）で見られる！！！
そうワクワクしながら映画館の席につきました。
マイフェアレディのオープニングでは、お花の画像とともに「序曲」が流れて、キャスト・スタッフの名前が表示されます。（昔の映画って、最初にスタッフクレジットが流れること多いですよね）

家で何度も何度も観て聴いたあの場面を、映画館で全身で浴びることができていることに感動して、まだストーリーも始まっていないのに、目にじんわり涙がこみあげてきてしまいました。
それ以降ずっと、涙じんわり状態でしたが、その状態の最中でも特に感動が強まったのは、アスコット競馬場に、オードリー演じるイライザが登場するシーンです。
というのも、こちらの記事↓（外部リンク）
に、アスコット競馬場でのオードリーの衣装の白さの美しさについて書かれており、それに注目しようと思いながらこのシーンを見てみると、本当にそうで、オードリーの衣装の白が、画面に映っている白色の中で一番美しい白であり、「ああ、これが4Kなんだ」と、４K映像を映画館のスクリーンで観れている喜びを強く嚙み締めることになりました。
そのアスコットのシーンが終わり、ジェレミー・ブレット演じるフレディが歌うあの名シーン（歌は吹き替えだったらしいですね！）も終わって、やってきたのが「インターミッション」！！！！
長い映画の途中の休憩タイムのことなんですが、インターミッションが始まることを告げる表示が出たあと、スクリーンの映像がいったん消えて、場内に明かりがつき、休憩となりました。
家でDVDを見ているときに考えた、「公開当時に映画館で観てた人はここでトイレとか行ってたのかな」を、自分が体験できる日が来るなんて！ 感動しながら急いでトイレに行き、急いで戻ってくると、私が訪れた劇場ではインターミッションは5分間だったので、映画が再開するちょうどいい頃合いになっていました。
インターミッション、昔の映画ではよく見かけますが（本作とか、サウンドオブミュージックとか、アラビアのロレンスとか）、最近の作品だと、長時間の映画でも無いことが多いですよね。この前見に行った「オッペンハイマー」（180分）も、インターミッション無しだったので、事前に水分をあまりとらないようにしてから観に行きました。
インターミッションがあったら、膀胱にそんなに気を遣う必要がなくなるのになあ。

そんなこんなで、上記の2つの、大きな個人的感動ポイントを含む、素晴らしい映画体験ができて、満足感に満ち溢れて帰宅したのですが、次の日朝起きると、早くももう一回観たくなっていて、
上映期間の2週間の間に、結局3回も映画館へ観に行ってしまいました！（なんて暇な大学生なんだろうか！）
2回、3回と同じ映画を観ていても、
感動ポイントが変わったり（2回目は「君住む街角」のジェレミー・ブレットが格好良すぎたのが一番の感動。3回目は、もうこれ以上は見に来れないことがわかっていたので、「時間通りに教会へ」や「彼女のことで頭がいっぱい」の曲を聴き、「ああもう終わっちゃう、映画館で次観れるのはいつだろう」というところに一番心を動かされる）、
笑い上戸の方がいて、その方の笑い声につられて余計に面白く感じるなど、その日の他のお客さんの影響を受けたりと、
何度目でも新たな楽しみがありました。
そして何より、大スクリーン・全身に響く音響、ポップコーンの香りとカップのジュースの冷たさを、体を包み込む座席という、映画館でしか味わえない物事が存在する中で、大好きな映画を観ることができたというのは、忘れることのできない大切な思い出となりました。
「午前十時の映画祭」という映画祭の存在を知って、本当によかったなと思います。
今年度の午前十時の映画祭である、「午前十時の映画祭14」のオードリー枠は、「ティファニーで朝食を」。今週金曜日、2024年4月26日から公開ですよ！もちろん観に行きます。
「午前十時の映画祭」の作品の上映は、基本的に午前中開始・1日1回ですが、「ティファニーで朝食を」は、Filmarksとのコラボによる夜上映があるとのこと！！↓（外部リンク）
選択肢が増えるのは、とてもありがたいことですね。
そして今年度の「午前十時の映画祭14」のミュージカル映画枠は、このブログで何度も何度も触れている、「雨に唄えば」！
グループBの映画間で先に2週間上映、その次にグループAの映画館で2週間上映という、1か月間日本のどこかしらで「雨に唄えば」が上映される期間がやって来るので、10回ぐらい観に行っちゃうんじゃないかしら。
午前十時の映画祭をはじめとした、名作映画のリバイバル上映、これからもたくさん観に行きたいです！

I start new article series in which I write about the experience of watching old masterpieces movies in movie theater screens in present day through revival screenings and so on.
The memorable first article of this series is "My Fair Lady", released in 1964, starring Audrey Hepburn.

The project is to screen various classic movies throughout the year at movie theaters in various locations of Japan, once a day for one to two weeks.

午前十時の映画祭 has holden 14 times by this year. In recent years, Audrey Hepburn's films have been screened around Golden Week, and last year, the 2023's Audrey film was "My Fair Lady".
I love musical movies, and I also love Audrey. "My Fair Lady" has been my very-very-very favorite movie ever since I borrowed its DVD from my local library when I was a junior high school student.
I thought that I can't watch movie which released in 1964 in the movie theaters in the 21st century. I thought that it is only way to watch old movie that I watch them on small screens like TV, PC, Smart phone. So, when I found out about the festival's existence and saw "My Fair Lady" in the lineup of movies, I jumped for joy.
When I was a junior high school student, I met this movie. Even though I didn't even know half of the meanings of the English words used in the lyrics of songs of this movie, I watched the DVDs over and over again and I remembered lyrics by their sounds. I became to be able to sing the songs in the from memory.
If I tell me when I was in junior high school, "You'll be seeing this movie in theaters 10 years from now", I wonder what I would have thought.
On Friday, April 28, 2023, the first day screening of My Fair Lady of 2023's 午前十時の映画祭, I went to the movie theater. (I ignored the fact that my graduate school entrance exam was coming up. I was an easy-going university student enjoying my fourth year as an undergraduate in which I had much free times.)
I can watch My Fair Lady on a movie theater's big screen, with theater's deep sound, and in 4K (My Fair Lady was eligible for 4K screening)! ! !
I was so excited, and I took my seat at the movie theater.
At the opening of My Fair Lady, "Overture" is played with images of flowers, and the names of the cast and staff are displayed. (In old movies, staff credits often play at the beginning.)

I was so moved by the fact that I was able to experience the scene that I had watched and listened to so many times at home with my whole body in the movie theater. Tear started a little in my eyes even though the story had not even started yet.
I have been in a state of tears a little ever since, but what particularly moved me was the scene where Eliza acted by Audrey, appeared on the Ascot Racecourse.

In this article, it is written that the beauty of the white of Audrey's costume at the Ascot racecourse. So, I paid attention to this scene. I found that the article is true. The white of Audrey's costume was the most beautiful white among all the whites on the screen. I thought "Oh, this is 4K!" I was so happy to be able to watch this movie's 4K images on the screen of a movie theater.
After the Ascot scene was over, and the famous scene in which Freddy acted by Jeremy Brett sings (I heard the song was dubbed!) was also over, and then came "Intermission"！！！！
After the sign that said "Intermission" is starting, the screen went off, the lights came on. It is time to take a break.
I never thought that the day that I can do like I thought would come. I thought while watching this movie's DVD at home: "I wonder if people who watch the movie in theaters when this movie release went to the restroom or something here."!
I hurried to the restroom, and when I hurried back to the theater's seat, the intermission's time of theater I went to was 5 minutes long, so it was just in time for the movie to resume.
I often see Intermission in old movies (like this film, The Sound of Music, Lawrence of Arabia, etc.), but in recent films, there is not Intermission even in long movies. The last time I went to watch "Oppenheimer" (180 minutes), there was no intermission, so I made sure I didn't drink too much water beforehand.
If there are intermission, I need not to worry so much about my bladder.

So, I had a wonderful movie experience that included the two big my heart's moving points mentioned above, and I went home full of satisfaction, but when I woke up the next morning, I already wanted to watch this movie again.
I ended up going to the movie theater to watch "My Fair Lady" three times during the two-week screening period! (What a leisure university student!)
Even if I watch the same movie two and three times,
The impressive points changed (the second time, I was most impressed by how cool Jeremy Brett was in "On The Street Where You Live". The third time, I knew I couldn't come to watch this movie anymore, so When I listen to songs "Get Me To The Church On Time" and "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face", I was most moved because I thought that "Oh, this movie's end will come soon, when can I watch it at the movie theater next?")
and I was influenced by the other audience each day, such as when there was good laugher, and I feel funnier more because of the person's laughter.
There was something new each time.
Best of all, I was able to watch my favorite movie on a big screen, with acoustics that filled my entire body, and a seat that hugged my body while enjoying the smell of popcorn and the coolness of the juice in my cup. It was a precious memory that I will never forget.
I'm really glad that I found the existence of a film festival called "午前十時の映画祭".
The Audrey's movie for this year's 午前十時の映画祭 is "Breakfast at Tiffany's". It will be released this Friday, April 26, 2024! Of course, I'll go to watch it.
Screenings for the 午前十時の映画祭 generally start in the morning and screen once a day, but "Breakfast at Tiffany's" will be screened in the evening too in collaboration with Filmarks! ! ↓(external link)
It is very thankful that options to watch movie increase.
And the musical movie of this year's "午前十時の映画祭" is "Singin' in the Rain", which I have mentioned many times on this blog!
With Group B theaters will screen it for two weeks first, and then Group A theaters will screen for two weeks. There will be a period when "Singin' in the Rain" will be screened somewhere in Japan for a month. I wonder I'll go see it about 10 times.
I'm looking forward to going to many more revival screenings of classic movies, including 午前十時の映画祭!

We can watch old various masterpiece movies in many parts of Japan's movie theaters.
In 午前十時の映画祭, foreign movie is shown with Japanese subtitle not Japanese dubbing. So, people who can't listen Japanese well can enjoy movies.
