The Broadway Melody (Introducing first appearance movies of songs sung in "Singin' in the Rain" ②)

I am Japanese. I write this blog not only in Japanese but also in English. But I'm not good at English very much, so I think that there are many mistakes in my English. I appropriate your understanding.

"The Broadway Melody", also known as "The Broadway Melody of 1929".

This movie was released in 1929. It is commemorable first musical movie of MGM. And I heard that it is first all talking musical movie in Hollywood.

Director is Harry Beaumont.

Charles King, Anita Page and Bessie Love are starring.

One of the main themes of this movie's story is "Love". 

I personally don't like this story very much ('Personally' !).

I felt worth watching to many songs which I knew from "Singin' in the Rain" more than to story.

Broadway Melody

The main character, Eddie, acted by Charles King made this song. This song is played many times in this movie. In "Singin' in the Rain", this song is sung in opening and ending of the scene that Don explained new movie's plot of modern scene to president.

You could say this song is theme song of "The Broadway Melody".

You Were Meant for Me

In "Singin' in the Rain", this song is played in the fantastic scene that Don tells his heart to Kathy with the help of movie sets.

Because of this scene, I had image of this song as like "pure love". 

In "The Broadway Melody", this song is sung in the scene when love is told too. However, the scene's love is complicated rather than pure love.

I was surprised at how this song was originally used.

By the way, this song is often used as BGM in "Tom and Jerry".  （I love arrangement of this song's melody in "The Mouse Comes to Dinner" !）

Wedding of the Painted Doll

In "Singin' in the Rain", this song is one of the songs played in montage scene before "Beautiful Girl" scene.  When the scene that women who wear costumes like toy soldiers, this song is sung.

In "The Broadway Melody", this song is sung in the scene of performance at the theater.

We can only listen a part of this song and only listen short version in "Singin' in the Rain".  It may be interesting that you listen all of this song in "The Broadway Melody".

In "The Broadway Melody", we can listen like this the songs which is used in "Singin' in the Rain".
